“What’s going on?”

Today is Tuesday October 27, 2020. A lot is going on.

There is a week until the polls close for the 2020 election. “More than 66 million people have already voted” and “33 states already surpassed their pre-election vote totals from 2016”. It is hard for media and polling stations to estimate the total number of votes they will receive at the conclusion of this election. This is the second election that I have voted in, but I had never heard of such large early voting turnouts at the polls until this election.

In person and absentee voting has become the hip and trendy thing to do. If you don’t vote you are frowned upon and judged. But some of which who attempted to drop off or mail in their votes have not been accounted for. In Boston and LA, ballot drop boxes have been set on fire. Votes will simply be unaccounted for if they are illegible.

Yes, the principle and ideal of participating and doing your civic duty is a commendable one. But does it really matter? If the sitting President didn’t win the popular vote, does it matter what we say? This isn’t the first time that this has happened. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen our government directly oppose the very things that the general public is saying. It isn’t the first time that we have cringed and wept at the confirmation of a Supreme Court “justice”: one who does not represent what is best for a majority of the American people. It is surprising that this was expected by myself and by others. Clearly, it was expected by the SCOTUS elect, and her blank notepad during her confirmation hearings.

Are we truly surprised?

In addition, another Black man was killed by police in Philadelphia.

In front of his mother.

In broad daylight.

Shot fourteen times.

Yes, he wielded a knife. But was it worth his life? Walter Wallace Jr. is now a cold lifeless shell. A statistic, another Black man gunned down, another victim of unnecessary force. In the past twenty four hours, Philadelphia has combusted. Riots and protests have hit their streets, and more than 30 cops have been injured. Allegedly.

Who will protect and serve the American people? Who will finally present and enforce liberty and justice, for all?
